Gastric mucosa of a monkey.

The following layers are identified:

  1. Layer of gastric pits lined with surface mucous cells
  2. Isthmus or neck of gastric glands lined with mucous neck cells and parietal cells
  3. Base of gastric glands lined with zymogenic cells and parietal cells
  4. Muscularis mucosa composed of smooth muscle fibers

The lamina propria (*) is abundant in the region of the pits and extends into the thin spaces seen between the gastric glands.
