    12.84   Liver Version française
Section of a human liver.

This field shows hepatocyte plates (H) next to a central vein (V). In this section distinct spaces (arrows) are seen between the hepatocyte membranes and the thin cytoplasm of the endothelial cells.

These thin spaces were not seen in previous images of the liver but have been artificially enlarged in the present preparation. In these spaces (called perisinusoidal spaces or spaces of Disse), the free surfaces of hepatocytes show microvilli visible with the electron microscope (Figure 12.81). Connective tissue reticular fibrils (collagen type III) are also present in these spaces of Disse.

The fenestrated basal cytoplasmic membrane of endothelial cells is not associated with a basement membrane. Thus, the blood plasma has free access to the cytoplasmic membrane of the hepatocytes, permitting the exchange of various molecules between blood and hepatocytes.
