Base of duodenal crypts next to the muscularis mucosa (M).

The bottom of the crypts or glands (G) is lined with undifferentiated epithelial cells. The Paneth cells are not present in the duodenum (see these cells in Figure 12.32).

The lamina propria (*) shows numerous lymphocytes and plasma cells. (See Paneth cells in the following figures of the jejunum.)
