The dense connective tissue of the lamina propria underlying the epithelium contains several PAS purple-stained acini of esophageal glands which secrete the carbohydrate-rich mucin.

Some of these glands show their excretory ducts (arrows) approaching or connecting to the esophageal epithelium.
