16.13 Follicular atresia

Section of the ovarian cortex of a monkey. The framed area is seen at a higher magnification in Figure 16.14.

Next to a normal primary multilaminar follicle (Pa-m), a large secondary follicle with its large antrum (An) shows obvious signs of degeneration, or atresia.

This regression is indicated by the disorganization of the zona granulosa (ZG) and the presence of numerous degenerating and pyknotic nuclei of follicular or granulosa cells (arrows).
