    16.4   Ovarian cortex Version française
Cortex of the ovary of a monkey.

Underlying the epithelium at the surface of the ovary, a layer of dense connective tissue forms the tunica albuginea (Alb).

Nearby are numerous small primordial follicles (Po) and a few growing primary follicles (Pa). Also identified is a large secondary antral follicle (SF) (top), along with an atretic or degenerating follicle (AtF) (bottom).

The other elongated pale scars correspond to connective tissue residues of atretic secondary follicles, or corpora atretica (C-At).
