Section of an early secondary or antral follicle (SF). The relatively small antrum (An), containing follicular fluid, is surrounded by numerous follicular cells (Fo). These follicular cells surround a large oocyte (O) delimited by its zona pellucida (ZP). This oocyte shows a big nucleus (N) containing chromosomes with diffuse outlines. A distinct theca interna (TI), composed of modified fibrocytes, is seen at the surface of the follicle. Stain: H–E
