    16.37   Mammary gland Version française
Drawing of a sagittal section of a resting or prelactating mammary gland.

This drawing shows 4 lobes (from a total of 15 to 20) delimited by dense connective tissue septae.

The branching ducts of a given lobe do not show secretory alveoli or acini. They merge to form a single lactiferous duct that opens at the tip of the nipple. In the areolar region this duct expands to form the sinus lactiferous.

Surrounding the lobes is a variable amount of adipose tissue.
