Follicular (Fo) or granulosa cells surround the antrum. At the periphery of the follicle they form a layer of regular thickness called the zona granulosa (ZG). These follicular cells also form the cumulus oophorus (CO) around the oocyte (O). A theca interna (TI) is visible at the surface of the follicle. The pale pink scars surrounding the antral follicle are the corpora atretica (C-At) arising from the degeneration or atresia of secondary follicles (see figures 16.12 to 16.16). Stain: H–E
