    16.11   Ovarian cortex Version française
Section of the ovarian cortex of a monkey showing a large secondary follicle (SF) with an antrum (An).

Follicular (Fo) or granulosa cells surround the antrum. At the periphery of the follicle they form a layer of regular thickness called the zona granulosa (ZG).

These follicular cells also form the cumulus oophorus (CO) around the oocyte (O).

A theca interna (TI) is visible at the surface of the follicle.

The pale pink scars surrounding the antral follicle are the corpora atretica (C-At) arising from the degeneration or atresia of secondary follicles (see figures 16.12 to 16.16).
