In a central collapsed antral cavity (*) only a few degenerating follicular cells are present (arrowheads) plus a residual oocyte (O) surrounded by its zona pellucida (ZP).

The stroma surrounding this central cavity, showing invading fibrocytes (Fi), includes early signs of collagen deposition (arrows) involved in the formation of the scarlike corpora atretica already identified in Figure 16.11.
