Section of a human corpus luteum.
This field shows the two main types of steroid-secreting lutein cells. The large granulosa lutein cells (Glu) have a spherical nucleus in a lightly stained abundant cytoplasm. They form the major component of the organ. The smaller theca lutein cells (TLu) form cords or strings in crevices between the granulosa lutein cells. In this section the capillaries appear as acidophilic threads (Ca). Stain: H–E
