16.34   Endometrium during the menstrual phase Version française
Section of a human endometrium during the menstrual phase.

The superficial zone of the endometrium has detached from the mucosa and only the basal zone of this mucosa remains. Note the absence of an epithelial lining at the surface of the endometrium (arrowhead).

The dense connective tissue of the basal zone, which forms the lamina propria (*), contains the basal portions of narrow uterine glands (arrows). These residual glands serve to regenerate the whole glands during the next endometrial cycle.

The myometrium (My) is seen on the left.
