    16.5   Ovarian cortex Version française
Ovarian cortex showing the tunica albuginea (Alb).

Next to this tunica are several primordial follicles (Po) and a few primary unilaminar follicles (Pa-u). The oocytes of these follicles show a large nucleus (N) in an abundant cytoplasm.

In the case of the primordial follicles (Po), the oocytes are surrounded by a layer of flattened follicular cells.

In the case of the primary unilaminar follicles (Pa-u), which are at the initial stage of oogenesis, the oocytes are surrounded by a single layer of cuboidal follicular cells (Fo).

These various follicles are separated by stromal cells or fibrocytes (Fi).
