This field shows several convoluted seminiferous tubules lined with a stratified seminiferous epithelium (E) around a central lumen (*). This epithelium is composed of several generations of germinal cells at various stages of spermatogenesis. The youngest germinal cells are located along a connective tissue limiting membrane (M). The more differentiated germinal cells (spermatids and spermatozoa) are seen along the lumen. The interstitial or interlobular tissue contains clusters of chromophilic Leydig cells (L), which are endocrine cells that secrete the hormone testosterone. The Leydig cells are seen in loose connective tissue containing blood vessels (V) and lymphatics. Stain: H–E
