Section of the wall of the aorta stained black with silver to demonstrate reticular fibres (collagen type III).
Associated with the surfaces of the blue-stained elastic lamina are several twisted reticular fibres (arrows). In reality these black fibres are fascicles of type III collagen fibrils. Some of these fibres bridge two adjacent elastic lamellae (arrowheads) and serve to anchor smooth muscle fibres. The muscle cells are unstained in this section. Stain: Silver
