Section of the rat testis stained with PAS-hematoxylin.
Next to a seminiferous tubule (T) there is an oblique section of an arteriole. The smooth muscle cells of its media are seen cut longitudinally (red arrowhead) and transversely (blue arrows). The PAS-positive layer at the surface of these cells corresponds to the basement membrane present at their surface. This PAS purple staining is due to the carbohydrate-rich type IV collagen fibrils present in this basement membrane. Stain: PAS-Hematoxylin
