Transverse section of the media of an aorta.
The parallel black elastic lamellae (E) are not smooth. They are hairy because of the small elastic fibres protruding from the lamellae. Such small fibres are inserted between the individual smooth muscle fibres. Most of the muscle cells are cut obliquely, but some are seen in cross sections (double-headed arrows). Other muscle fibres seen in longitudinal sections (*) show their extremities reaching adjacent elastic lamellae. Stain: Verhoeff
