Section of the larynx.
This field shows an oblique section of an arteriole (A). The smooth muscle cells of the media are cut transversely above (*) and longitudinally below (+). The intensely stained internal elastic layer, seen in face view, is composed of individual elastic fibres (arrow). This elastic layer appears continuous in the part of the arteriole cut longitudinally above, but this is due to the superposition of numerous elastic fibres in a thick section. The adventitia of this artery is thin (arrowhead). Two venules (V) are present in the connective tissue between the hyaline cartilage and the arteriole. Stain: Verhoeff
