Longitudinal section of a large muscular artery.

In this vessel the intima (I) is thick. Between the endothelium and the acidophilic internal elastic lamella (oblique blue arrow) are some smooth muscle cells arranged longitudinally (arrowheads).

The media (M) is composed of closely packed, transversely cut smooth muscle cells. Several of them show cross-sectional profiles of their nuclei.

The adventitia (A) shows a dense connective tissue containing collagen, elastin and fibrocytes.
