Section of thick skin stained with Verhoeff’s hematoxylin to show elastic fibres. The dense connective tissue of the dermis is composed of interwoven acidophilic bundles of type I collagen (red arrows) and of scattered elastic fibres (blue arrowheads). In the epidermis the boundaries of basal and polyhedral epithelial cells are clearly seen. Vessels (V) are identified in the dermis. Stain: Verhoeff
