Section of a human scalp.

This field shows a longitudinal section of a hair at its exit from the follicle at the surface of the skin.

This hair (*), yellowish in colour, is not pigmented with melanin.

The scales of the cuticle of the hair (arrowhead) are barely visible.

The material seen between the hair and the stratified epithelium of the skin (arrows) is composed of desquamated flakes of soft keratin and precipitated debris formed by sebaceous glands.

The outer root sheath is also labelled (+).
