The following structures and layers are labelled:

  • Connective tissue sheath of the hair (A)
  • External root sheath (B)
  • Acidophilic internal root sheath (C)
  • Basophilic cells, precursors of the cuticle of the hair (D)
  • Elongated epithelial cells of the keratogenous zone (E)
  • Elongated epithelial cells of the matrix of the bulb (F)
  • Melanocytes (G) located in the basal cell layer. Note that the epithelial cells of the matrix above also contain melanin granules. The melanocytes are responsible for the pigmentation of the hair.
