Longitudinal section of a human hair at its exit from a hair follicle.
This non-pigmented hair shows a fair-sized acidophilic medulla (*) containing cellular residues. Its cortex is yellowish (C) but is not pigmented with melanin. The cuticle of the hair (arrowheads), forming thin shingles at the surface of the cortex, is barely visible. The thin epidermis of the skin (E) is seen in proximity to the hair. Stain: H–E
