9.21   Hair follicle and associated glands Version française
Oblique section of a hairy skin.

The following structures are labelled:

  • Oblique section of a hair follicle with the hair itself (A) and the external root sheath (arrows)
  • Sections of sebaceous glands (B)
  • Sections of apocrine sweat glands (C). These glands, which connect to the necks of hair follicles differ from the usual types of (eccrine) sweat glands shown in figures 9.14, 9.15 and 9.16, which open at the surface of skin.

The secretory portions of these apocrine glands (C) are composed of a single type of intensely stained secretory cells. These sweat glands are seen only in certain areas of the human skin (e.g., areola of mammary glands, axilla, inguinal and ano-genital regions).
