This field shows the hair with its melanin pigmented cortex (C). The cuticle of the hair is poorly pigmented (arrowheads). The wall of the follicle is lined with stratified epithelium of the outer root sheath (*) with a layer of soft keratin at its surface (+). This hair has no medulla. Stain: H–E
