Meibomian gland of the eyelid of a monkey.

These large glands are composed of numerous sebaceous acini (A) opening into a large central duct (*). These ducts open at the edges of the eyelids a short distance from the eyelashes.

In the eyelids, these glands are located in dense connective tissue forming the tarsal plate (T).

The inner surface of the eyelid is lined with the palpebral conjunctiva (arrow), which faces the cornea (C).
