The following layers of the retina, from the vitreous body down to the choroid, are identified:

  1. Basement membrane at the borderline between the retina and the vitreous body
  2. Layer of optic nerve fibres and ganglion cells
  3. Inner plexiform layer
  4. Inner nuclear layer
  5. Outer plexiform layer
  6. Outer nuclear layer with the nuclei of photoreceptor neurones
  7. Layer of rods and cones
  8. Pigmented cell layer of the retina
  9. Choroid composed of loose connective tissue containing numerous melanocytes (M) and blood vessels (V).
