In this section of the cartilage, the matrix around the chondrocytes is strongly basophilic owing to the presence of acidic glycosaminoglycans (e.g., hyaluronic acid). This matrix also contains collagen fibrils (type II), not visible here. The matrix surrounding the flattened chondroblasts of the chondrogenic layer is less basophilic. (The framed area is shown at a higher magnification in Figure 8.4). Subjacent to the epithelial lining of the trachea on the right is a layer of dense connective tissue showing small vessels.
