Mixed spicules on the inferior aspect of the epiphyseal plate.

In this section, the newly formed bone is acidophilic (A). It contains osteocytes in lacunae, and osteoblasts are seen along its surface. The residual calcified cartilage is basophilic (B) and is free of chondrocytes.

These mixed spicules are transitory and most of them will eventually be eroded by osteoclasts.
