This field shows a partially collapsed alveoli (Al). In this thick section the components of the alveolar walls are difficult to identify. A few alveolar type II cells (blue arrows) and the lumina of capillaries (Ca) may be recognized. The other visible nuclei belong to endothelial cells and alveolar type I cells. In the lumina of the alveoli there are several free alveolar macrophages (Ma). Stain: H–E
