Transverse sections of a cat’s tongue.
These images show that the bulk of the tongue is composed of deeply acidophilic bundles of striated muscles (M) arranged laterally, longitudinally and vertically. The mucosa shows numerous papillae (arrows), projections on the surface of the tongue. Several glands (G) are intercalated between bundles of muscle fibres. A fair-sized vessel (V) is also labelled.
