The lip is lined with a stratified squamous non-keratinized epithelium (E).

A labial gland (G) is present in the subepithelial connective tissue, or lamina propria, and between bundles of striated muscle fibres (M).

The labial glands are mixed and include mucous and serous acinar cells (see Figure 11.2). The duct of the gland (arrows) is labelled.
