Stratified squamous keratinized epithelium from the thin skin of a monkey's face.
In this thin stratified epithelium the number of epithelial cell layers is small. There are only a few squamous cells with basophilic keratohyalin granules (arrows). The cells keratinize and a few flakes of desquamating keratinized cells are visible (*). Some of the epithelial cells contain golden-brown pigment granules. The lamina propria (LP) underlies the epithelium. Stain: H–E
