Stratified squamous and keratinized epithelium of the thick skin from the palm of a monkey's paw.
The cells at the base are small and oriented vertically (arrowhead). The cells above are polyhedral. Several cells of these layers show brown melanin pigment granules next to their nucleus (arrows). The epithelial cells of the next layers become squamous and progressively accumulate basophilic keratohyalin granules (*). The more superficial cells suddenly keratinize (K) and lose their basophilic staining. These cells also lose their nucleus. The flattened residues of keratinized cells eventually desquamate.
