1.17   Stratified squamous epithelium of the vagina Version française
Stratified squamous epithelium of the human vagina.

This epithelium is composed of several superposed layers of cells. The cells attached to the connective tissue are small and elongated (arrows). These cells divide and give rise to the subjacent polyhedral cells showing spherical nuclei (*).

Above, the epithelial cells progressively become flat, or squamous, (+) but keep their nuclei.

The more superficial squamous cells eventually desquamate.
