Whole mount of the mesentery stained with silver nitrate showing a face view of a simple squamous epithelium.

The limits of the epithelial cells, also called mesothelial cells, are selectively stained with silver (arrows). Note that the outlines of the cells are irregular and the surface areas of these cells are variable.

The nuclei of the squamous cells are not stained.
