Dense connective tissue around the head of a long bone.
In this field two types of dense connective tissue lie side by side. (Left) The dense connective tissue is composed of large bundles of type I collagen fibres seen in longitudinal sections (arrows) and cross sections (arrowheads). There are few fibrocytes (F) between these fibres. (Right) The fibrocytes (F) have a distinct acidophilic cytoplasm. They are abundant and dispersed among less intensely stained disorganized collagen fibres (*). Stain: H–E
