Section of the mucosa of a tongue stained with Masson’s trichrome.

Underlying the stratified squamous epithelium (Epi), the loose connective tissue contains many plasma cells (P). Plasma cells show a small spherical nucleus in a basophilic cytoplasm.

These plasma cells, which derive from lymphocytes, secrete immunoglobulins during antigenic responses.
