Underlying the stratified squamous epithelium (Epi), the loose connective tissue contains many plasma cells (P). Plasma cells show a small spherical nucleus in a basophilic cytoplasm. These plasma cells, which derive from lymphocytes, secrete immunoglobulins during antigenic responses. Stain: Masson’s Trichrome
