14.8   Thyroid and parathyroid glands Version française
Section, showing side by side, a thyroid and parathyroid from a monkey.

Several thyroid follicles (bottom) show a thin epithelium around the homogeneous colloid (*). This colloid contains thyroglobulin, a precursor of the thyroid hormones.

The parathyroid gland (top) is composed of anastomosed plates of densely packed glandular cells (+). These glandular cells secrete the parathyroid hormone. Small vessels (V) are also seen between the plates or cords of glandular cells.
