Section, showing side by side, a thyroid and parathyroid from a monkey.
Several thyroid follicles (bottom) show a thin epithelium around the homogeneous colloid (*). This colloid contains thyroglobulin, a precursor of the thyroid hormones. The parathyroid gland (top) is composed of anastomosed plates of densely packed glandular cells (+). These glandular cells secrete the parathyroid hormone. Small vessels (V) are also seen between the plates or cords of glandular cells. Stain: H–E
