Section of the thyroid of a rat that was injected with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). This section was stained with periodic acid-Schiff. The colloid of the follicles, which contains thyroglobulin, a glycoprotein, is intensely stained purple with PAS (*). The presence of PAS-positive droplets (arrows) in the cytoplasm of follicular cells is also noticeable in this TSH-stimulated gland. These colloid droplets result from the activated endocytosis of the luminal colloid by the follicular cells (see details in Figure 14.7). Stain: PAS-Hematoxylin
