Section of a dog adrenal showing the zona reticularis of the cortex (R) and the well-fixed adrenal medulla (M).

The glandular cells of the intensely stained zona reticularis form irregular groups separated by some connective tissue.

The adrenal medulla is also composed of irregular groups of cells. These cells show an abundant slightly basophilic granulated cytoplasm. Some more chromophilic glandular cells (arrows) may belong to the sympathetic system.
