Section of a human corpus luteum showing groups of large and lightly stained granulosa lutein cells (*).
These cells which derive from the follicular cells of mature ovarian follicles secrete progesterone. Strings or clusters of small theca lutein cells (+), derived from the theca interna of ovarian follicles, are also endocrine cells secreting steroids. The progesterone secreted by the granulosa lutein cells reach the blood circulation via the numerous capillaries which have invaded the corpus luteum. Collapsed, these capillaries are barely visible in this field. Stain: H–E
