Growing secondary ovarian follicle with an antrum from a monkey.
The antrum (+), filled with follicular fluid, and the centrally located oocyte (O) are surrounded by numerous small follicular cells (F). These follicular cells are endocrine cells secreting estrogens. Surrounding the follicle, some modified stromal cells (*), forming the theca interna, are also identified as steroid-secreting cells. The estradiol secreted by the follicular cells reach the blood circulation via the numerous capillaries located near or in the theca interna. Stain: H–E
