This field shows a longitudinal section of the internal auditory canal, which contains the eighth cranial nerve (N) with its cochlear (C) and vestibular (V) branches. The turns of the cochlea (Co) and the vestibule (Ve) are indicated. At this magnification the limits of the membranous labyrinth and of the cochlear duct in particular are not visible. The middle ear (M) contains the ossicles (Os). The bone is particularly dense around the cochlea and the vestibule (*). Stain: H–E
