This field shows the tip of a fold in the mucosa with its lamina propria (*) lined with a simple columnar epithelium (E). The tall columnar epithelial cells show at their apex a thin feltlike layer (arrows) composed of fine microvilli. These epithelial cells concentrate the bile by reabsorbing water and ions from the lumen of the gallbladder. The concentrated bile is delivered via the cystic and common bile ducts into the duodenum.
